I seem to get my closest shaves with the "W". I used Ogalala soap this morning. Its a great soap and gave a great shave, but I still get a closer shave with the Williams.

Thanks for the offer Fuzzy, I really appreciate it. Luckily the CVS had some. Right next to the VDH boar brushes. I almost bought another one.
Anyways, back on topic, I used the Williams with my rubberset horse hair brush, and from some of the reviews here and other places, I wasn't sure it would work because the bristles are so soft. Well, it worked, and it worked well. I couldn't believe how much lather that brush worked up from a soap. I honestly didn't think it had the back bone, but it did. The scent isn't bad, it just smells like soap. And the lather was what I expected. Nice and slick. I got a really good shave with Williams and my OCMM.

Hope no one minds resurecting this thread. I've managed to hoard five pucks of the vintage Williams and I've gotten in several dozen shaves with the modern stuff. I can say that I like the modern Williams, and would be happy using nothing but it if I had to, but the vintage stuff is just about the best there is. I love it!

Revive away . There are a group of us that feel the same way. I think the modern stuff is as good as older myself. Williams is my desert Island soap for sure. Fuzzy

I was curious about this when I first saw it at CVS. It's not bad of soap. I tried worse. This soap is better and inexpensive compared to those that failed before it. It yielded 5 passes when used Vie-Long 16728.
I wouldn't be surprised at all how it would fair with other brushes. After all it's been produced since 1840s. It's not the soap it's the technique of the person to blame.
Reminds me of this one Chef when asked which blade make he prefers he said something along the lines of "German, Japan made it doesn't matter...give it to an untrained Chef and they'll quickly destroy the knife."
Before I went with Williams this one SOTD, I was using Marvy William same procedure as always with soaps ( shake 3x and lathered puck 30sec ) but to no avail. Unlike Williams there was no lather explosion within 30seconds of working brush. It was meringue-like lather. Attempted palm lather but no luck either and that's why I ended up with Williams that SOTD. Took 1min20sec to lather up face completely.
The water seen from the puck while lathering wasn't intentional. It was water oozing knot generally happens. I don't dowse the puck with hot water like some do.

Ivan as usual very well written post. I agree that MOST of the problems people blame on Williams is due to technique. I love this soap as all that know me quickly figure out.
I also do not soak the puck. I have some friends that swear by that, but for me does not change things one way or the other. Start with a drier brush and add a little water along is great for me.

I always have some Williams on hand. 99 cents per puck, can't beat that. I've also been lucky enough to find a small stash of the vintage stuff, including a nearly unused stick of the rose scent , and a much older stick wrapped in a waxy paper. I don't know if the paper started waxy, or if something leached out of the soap over the years. I have used the older stick a few times and, even after a thorough cleaning, as soon as the soap hits the water an "oil slick" of sorts goes all over the water surface. Soap still works great though! I have to admit, I prefer the vintage choices, but nothing wrong with modern Williams. As far as the bug candle scent, When I was in high school I got a part time job at a candle shop. I was the only person in the day we got 4 LARGE boxes full of bug candles of various shapes and sizes. By about the third box, by body couldn't take the overwhelming stench of citronella, and I ran to the bathroom and proceeded to have the worst projectile vomiting fit I have ever had in my life. My stomach still gets a little weak when I smell a fresh Williams puck (or a bug candle) but I can't hold that against it

I am lucky that I am good with the scent. Do not have any of the really vintage stuff maybe a hunt I will get on here soon.
