Williams FTW!
OK, it isn't my favorite soap, but every time I hear somebody bashing it, I want to shave with it more.
Oh well...

I sent a mail to Williams asking how the formula has been changed over the years. I am not sure if they will answer but it they do I will post it here. Colgate is probably my favorite soap but it is not made anymore so Williams is a good solid product that works great for me. Fuzzy

What was Colgate like scent-wise?

My only problem with the Williams is that the scent is not something that I really like. As for the lather, hey, I had to learn how to make it good with MWF and the SCS creams so I have not given up on it yet.
I do think it has helped me make some super lather with my SCS Verbena SC that causes some serious sting on my face when used alone. The SCS SC scent makes up for the Williams scent. I will give the Williams a try with a few other creams to see how they go in the super lather.

What was Colgate like scent-wise? It is a soap scent nothing fancy. But I like it a lot. Fuzzy

Cool!
Had a good shave today with da Mug. I am getting better at finding the right mix for a good lather. Your tip on starting dryer than normal and adding water by dipping helped a lot.

Actually, I already made this same post in the thread on Williams that you had in "the cutlery shop", but since you bumped this thread specifically to get input from us "new guys" . . .
OK Fuzzy, you said you wanted to hear from the newer guys. I guess I qualify as one of the "new guys" on this forum . . .
For probably the first fifty years of my shaving experience, the only soaps I was aware of were Williams, Colgate and Old Spice. I tended to kind of alternate between them. The Old Spice was a little more expensive but it did fit my O.S. mug better than the others.
Then they stopped making OS and eventually, Colgate at some point and so, it got to where Williams was the only one I could usually find at the local drug stores, consequently, I have had plenty of experience with Williams.
At some point here, my son convinced me to try some of the stuff in the "bug bomb" cans. I tried both a foam and a gel . . . good grief, why would anyone prefer this junk to a mug, and a brush?
It wasn't until I got into collecting razors and eventually started reading the forums, that some of the participants on said forums, convinced me that I "needed" to have a dozen or so shaving brushes and a dozen or so soaps and, of course another dozen or so creams. (Let's not even talk about AS and other such products.)
To address the original question about Williams, I still keep a puck in one of my collection of OS mugs along with several other soaps. I kind of cycle through these soaps and also a few creams on a regular basis.
Since I have pretty much settled on just one razor to use every morning (The 1900/1901 Gem Jr. Bar), my opportunity for variety comes in choosing a brush, a soap or cream and an AS every morning. Frankly I still like Williams about as good as most any of the soaps. I will admit that some of the others do have a little nicer fragrance.
Regards, Tom

Some days I get great lather out of it and some times not so much. Regardless I seem to reach for it at least a couple times a week. No, not my best or favorite soap but a good one none the less and one of my go-to soaps.

Gotta news break about Williams Mug Soap. My wife loves it. Now don't get your shorts in a tizzy guys. She doesn't use it to shave. She uses it to scrub socks and stuff that get really dirty and stained. She used to pre soak them in water and bleach. Today she scrubbed and soaked them in water and Mug Soap. Voila, they came clean. She wants me to go and buy a few more cakes for her. Finally a good use for Mug soap in my household. By the way, it is not a bad bath soap either.

The little lady asked me to go out and get some of the "good" soap for stains this morning. So off to CVS I went and bought 3 cakes of Williams Mug Soap. She will be a happy little kitty when she sees that stuff she calls "wonderful" and I call great bath soap.
