After trying Treat blades and liking them, I decided I'd try some carbon steel Gem blades from Ted Pella. I tried the 121-1, Single Edge, Carbon Steel GemĀ® Blades. www.tedpella.com/dissect_html/dissect.htm#_121_1I just finished my second shave and this blade has been great for me. I used a Gem 1912 for both shaves. I did hand strop the blade 10 times on each side before both shaves. Seems very sharp. Yesterdays shave was with two days growth, and it went right through the hairs like a hot knife through butter. No irritation, no nicks, weepers, etc. Today I got a nearly BBS shave no nicks, weepers, no irritation. There was a little of a drop off in sharpness, but not as big as I thought, especially since I had two days growth before the first shave. I am rinsing the blade after, patting it dry and dipping in 91% alcohol. So far no visible rust. I'm trying to get 3 or 4 shaves out of these. I do have the stainless steel coated blades and like them too. I just couldn't resist trying these. Joe

I love using Treet blades... keep us up on how these do. I might just have to drop a dime on them. Fuzzy

I will post again after the third shave. Im hoping that I can get a comfortable third shave and possibly a fourth. Who knows heheh
I do think that palm stropping this blade has made a difference.

Earlier today I shaved for the third time with this blade. The blade still cut, but it took 4 passes, instead of 3 -- and i had to do more cleaning up at some rough patches. It was a decent shave, but I don't think I can get a 4th shave from this blade.
I did palm strop before each of the three shaves, so its possible that fewer palm stropping strokes would allow me to get a 4th decent shave. Maybe 5 strokes on the palm, instead of 10.
All in all, I'm pleased.

Price was $16.25 for 200 blades, $11.70 for shipping = $27.95 total. So, about $0.14 per blade.

Hey Fuzzy,
You got a couple of those carbon steel blade laying around you could send to a rabbit lover to take for a test drive.
If I like them maybe we can split a 200 blade order.
By the way, the carbon steel blades are the ones that are kind that will rust unless kept in something like alcohol?

With the Carbon steel I usually dip them in alcohol and then dry them. I don't know why I like them but I like them a lot. Fuzzy

Thanks Fuzzy, Will PM my addy. By the way, how many shaves you get out of these blades and do you hand strop them between shaves? I never got on the hand strop bandwagon. I get 4 shaves sometimes 5 outta of must my blades. The Treets and PAL blue blades are all about the same to me. With the Gem Stainless I get about the same also. I never hand strop.. I do try to keep the Carbon still blades dryer then the pella's coated. It is not that much work and being able to get them local is a boost. Fuzzy

Bryce, I just wipe my carbon steel blades dry and hand-strop them, and I have no problem with rust. I live in the desert, though.
Drumrman, I have wondered about the GEM carbon steel blades at Ted Pella. I have suspected that Treets and GEM Blue Stars are the same blades in different packaging, and I have wondered if the GEM carbons at Ted Pella are the same as the Treets and Blue Stars. Your good experience would indicate that buying these blades in bulk from Ted Pella is a good way to go. Thanks!

I have used Ted Pella blades a lot and have been very pleased with them. I have used both the stainless and the carbon SE blades as well as their injector blades. For the price, they can't be beat, IMO.
