Hi all,
Just joined this forum - RocketMan introduced me to it through Badger and Blade. I'm a new SE convert - my father gave me a Gem Jewel he had bought, and I had my first shave with it a couple of days ago and was blown away - the closest, most comfortable shave I have ever had. I can safely say that after that one shave I am completely hooked. I've been wetshaving for three months or so - using a #15 Aristocrat, a Dovo Shavette and my great grandfathers Joseph Rodgers and Sons straight. I think these will all be shelved for a while!
SWMBO has introduced a razor purchase ban (we've got our second child on the way, so money is tight!), but I have already suggested that a good birthday present would be a lather catcher.... she is interested in razors if they are both beautiful and functional. Unfortunately my birthday isn't until September, so I have a while to wait. My question is how do I know what I am buying? I've already started trawling the local antique stores, and will probably have to rely on the Bay. Do all lather catchers take modern SE blades? If not, how do I distinguish between them?
Sorry if this seems like a noob question - I have done some reading, but can't figure it out for myself so thought it would be best to ask the experts.
Thanks! Richard

Muahahahahhahahahahahaaaa!!!! It is working!! (as he rubs his hands gleefuly!!)
Hi Richard - nice to see you made it over. Welcome!!!!
Ya gotta respect the SWMBO - but you may be able to soften her up by suggesting you will be diligent about your research, and then maybe come up with a reasonable sum, like 15-20 bucks that you could consider to spend on a lather catcher at some point between now and september. That way, if you see one you can pick it up on spec!!
There are a few threads here already looking at which razors take SE blades (all Ever Readys, GEMS and STARs beginning I think just after the 1901/1902 period - it is here somewhere!) and some other info on lather catchers. Folks here should chime in soon to let you know their recommendations for well priced razors as well.
It is a worthy goal - but it can take awhile. The learning and the hunt can be quite enjoyable too though - and your beard will keep growing for years and years so there is time there too!!
Again, Welcome!

Thanks - proves I didn't look through this forum very carefully! Have found the thread now - if I understand correctly, just about all lather catchers will take modern SE blades. Easy! I think I will have to be good and hold to SWMBO's razor ban and just try to buy a REALLY nice lather catcher for my birthday! What price range should I be looking at to get one in excellent condition? It's a shame (though I understand why) that you can't post links to live auctions here... would make the search much easier with advice on hand. Richard

Welcome to TOS Richard! ;D ;D I see you are in new Zeland so shipping will probably be killer on you Maybe try and find one the European e-bay if that will cut down on shipping at all As far as price range depends on what model (the earlier or more popular the model the more expensive) and the condition it is in. For a functional shaver you are looking for I would expect somewhere between $15-45 Don't think you would have much luck with antique shops where you are at so sadly E-bay and the other shaving forums B/S/T are your main options. Good luck with your hunt and CONGRATS on the new addition to the family Muahahahahhahahahahahaaaa!!!! It is working!! (as he rubs his hands gleefuly!!) Viva La Revolution!

Welcome to the show Richard. All that is good advise. I have seen some nice Lather Catchers selling for around 50 on the bay. But the shipping might be the bad part. Not real sure on that. The hunt can be fun though.
Until them enjoy the SE revolution and jump in with both feet here.
VIVA LA REVOLUTION indeed.
Fuzzy.

Thanks for the welcomes! You never know what is going to turn up in antique stores here in NZ - just the other day I came across a mint condition Ever ready Jewel set - looked completely unused! I also found my #15 Aristocrat in an NZ antique store. The joy is that people don't really know about the value of razors here, so if something does turn up I should get it for a bargain. The price range you suggested for lather catchers doesn't seem to bad at all - I think we'll go as high as USD$100 (including postage) for a REALLY nice one. Anyone selling? R

One more question - I don't have enough posts here to use the BST, but I've got 60 or so on badger and blade.... is it transferable?

here is the rule
#5 - New members are required to have 25 posts before they can sell OR buy OR trade on the B/S/T. New members from the other 3 shaving sites that have 25+ posts on any 3 of them upon joining are grandfathered in and can B/S/T immediately.
There you go.

Thanks for that. I'll post in BST at some stage... maybe not yet as I don't want to buy the razor of my dreams, then have to hand it over to SWMBO until September!
Postage doesn't look to be THAT bad.... means I'd still be able to spend up to $85 or so on the razor itself. For that kind of money I'm guessing I'll be able to buy a nice cased set?

You will definately find a nice cased set in that range. Prices for these on eBay has been going up fast lately though, so ya never know what can happen. The more these razors catch on and become popular, the more folks will spend on them at eBay. That is also one reason why it is good not to have links to live auctions - you show a cool razor you found here and try to get info on it, you will likely trigger somebody to go and try and outbid you for it! The price goes up and maybe you lose the auction because of it. Razor collectors are gentlemanly, but they can be ruthless!!!! Pretty razors........... Make sure you keep checking out your antique stores. Those other finds you came across are very desireable razors, so it shows they do come up where you are. I had to go on a short trip a couple of weeks ago and stopped in at one place. They had an uncased Ever Ready 1907/1908 with handle extension/stropper in excellent shape and they wanted 10.00 cdn. And, because it was the week after Xmas they had a 15% discount, so I got it for 8.50 cdn - perhaps just a little more in Australian dollars. And of course, no shipping!! So, it is worth looking around - ya never know! Even my SWMBO overlooks things picked up for less than ten bucks!! Just bring her an antique egg cup or something saying you just kept thinking of her when you saw this egg cup, and oh, I also found this cheap razor. Muaahahahahahahahah
