Hi all I've just received my 1902 Kampfe lather catcher... arrived safely, but reeked of cigarette smoke. Just the case smells, the razor is fine after a good clean! I've attached some photos if you're interested, but I'm also posting photos of it with blade in, just to make sure I've done the right thing before I give it a whirl. Thanks!! Attachments:

Here it is with the blade in. Have I done the right thing? Also, the teeth appear a little crooked - will this affect the shave at all? Cheers! Attachments:

Nice looking razor.. I do see some crooked teeth though.. might not be good for the shave. Never had one of those so will leave it to others to chime in on that.

I am afraid the only real way to test whether a razor will give a good shave is to shave with it If it does hurt you can try GENTLY bending the teeth back into shape with some pliers but hopefully they are alligned enough not to effect anything. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I'll give it a go in the morning... fingers crossed, because I don't have a lot of time to stem blood flow in the morning! I'll let you know what happens....

Give it a go. My guess is that the crooked teeth will not make much difference if any. They are not way crooked. But if you do try to straighten them go easy. Very EASY!!
Oh yeah, I have one of those and they are great shavers to be sure.

Yeah, those teeth are not very crooked really. The blade sits fine in the frame and the retainers seem fine. That should be a good shaver.
Enjoy!

Haven't summoned the courage yet... I will try it tonight. I just want to give myself plenty of time to make sure my lather is perfect etc, and that I have time to clean myself up if needed!

Hmm. Just had my first shave. Not spectacular, though I think it was my technique more than anything else. I don't think my two reduction passes took enough off (WTG then XTG) - these passes were very comfortable however. My ATG was not pleasant - pulling, so I decided to lower the angle and make sure I had no pressure. Took more off, but not as close as I'd like, and left me a few small nicks. I relathered then did a second ATG pass (I never do this, why did I choose to do it tonight?!) and have been left with quite a lot of nicks and irritation and still not a perfectly close shave. Frustrating, because I'm getting used to easy BBS shaves from my other razors.
As I said, I think it is my technique. Any tips?! Everything else about the shave was normal - hot shower prep, good slick proraso lather.
I plan to give my face a few days to recover (I'm vaguely on holiday - just a few private pupils to teach), then try again....

Sounds like practice is the key here.. Play with angles maybe. That is the best I can come up with.

Yeah, I'm going to keep persevering - I hate letting razors get the better of me! Over on B&B someone suggested that due to the light handle I should try applying a tiny bit of pressure... will experiment, and slowly play with blade angle. Watch this space...

Having used, and sold, two of these razors I wasn't overly impressed with them. The final results were similar to what I can get with any of the SE's or DE's I use regularly but the shave itself just wasn't comfortable. I just didn't enjoy using them and I think maybe it has something to do with the overall size of the head, but they're simply not for me.

Hurrah - my second shave was more successful. I applied a little pressure and checked my angle. I only ended up doing a WTG and 2 XTG passes - reasonably close (closer than any other razor doing this, and acceptable for a normal day.) I'll try ATG on my next shave - should go well at this rate!
