I recently purchased a Valet autostrop I found tucked away in a very small antiques store. The box and packaging looks almost brand new. I don't collect razors for looks or display but it is nice all the same. The razor and strop look pretty used but still in decent shape and working order. Now for my question: I watched Dave's video on how to modify a blade to fit a autostrop. www.youtube.com/user/GemCutlery#p/a/u/2/Y7Bq0nLygEgI was wondering if we ever found out what that tool was called and where I could purchase one? Also if anyone had found another way or tool that works just as well? Thanks

whoosh,
Can't remember what the tool was called but I found it in the pliers/cutters section of my local ACE Hardward store. Just a few dollars as well. If I get a chance tomorrow I will stop by the store I find out the exact name of the tool for ya.

They call them "end cutters" or "end nippers" Should be able to find them at any hardware or home improvement store. Nice looking set.

Thank you Gents ;D I'll have to stop by the hardware store when I'm out and about. One last question, what size do you guys use or prefer in these nippers? Looking online I see they have mini jewelers ones and am wondering if these would be too flimsy on the other hand heavy duty ones might be cumbersome Thanks again for the advice

Any type of tool that has a wide and flat end with which you can grab will do. I use something like in the middle:

That is a great set! I do love the early Valet packaging for those model C casket kits. I have one as well and it is one of my favorites. It displays just great with the razor out and the boxes and strop, blade..... Nice! It always gets ooooohs and ahhhhs from the crowd! (well, the one or two people I have strong armed into looking at it at any rate!)

Got my nippers today! Thanks for the help guys I removed the spine of a TP blade and aligned it up to my vintage autostrop blade to cut the indents to size. I noticed how much shorter the new blade was compared to the vintage one is this normal? I aligned it up best I could and nipped the edges and fitted it into the valet razor. Lathered up my superlather of Tabac and C.O.Bigelow which I always use when trying new razors and began the shave. It seemed to be doing okay no discomfort and went smooth enough. The trouble came after I finished the first WTG pass I rinsed my face to relather looked in the mirror and noticed my entire face was covered in tiny red dots! A second later I felt the sting of each and every cut Oh the pain I looked the razor over making sure the blade hadn't come loose or something but couldn't find anything wrong. Unable to muster the courage to try again I finished one more pass with my Gem MM open comb. Had no troubles after that nice smooth shave and the sting stopped after I applied WH and AS splash. I still can't figure out what went wrong though has to be how I modded the blade. I heard you guys talk about modding the autostrop to fit a modern blade how is this done? Maybe that will work instead of me modding the blade, I'm not giving up though I will let my face heal look into what went wrong and try again. For now though I'm left licking my wounds

something sounds wrong here.. the blades are the same size once you remove the spine or should be anyway. did you cut the spine off or just loosen it and pull it off?

loosened and pulled off, I found that funny too as I thought once I pulled the spine off they would be identical.
I Will post pics later today

Is the guard still straight? It looks to be from the pics just trying to think of things that could have been off.
Could have been the angle? I keep my valet almost flat on my face.
