Hello gents. This is my first ever post here. So far I've got a Micromatic that works, of course, like a champ. I've got to get myself a leather catcher. This will give me another good reason to keep combing the aisles and tables at the local flea markets. Love the website. Thanks!
By the way, I spotted a rather "nice" Gem Razor tray on my morning ebay rounds. Quite a bit out of range for my humble shaving budget, but there's this Tiffany Sterling Silver Gem Razor Tray listed. I'm not posting a link, but here's the item number. 260565969895 Makes me wonder who this little tray was made for, when, and why. I bet there's an interesting story behind this one.

Welcome to TOS. Feel free to ask any questions you have about SE shaving including advice about buying SE razors.
I would suggest that you look for a 1912 GEM or GEM Jr as well as a lather catcher. Most of us here will gladly help you with info about the year etc of the SE razors you might want to buy. Especially if you find one on eBay.
In antique stores it is a bit different. Just don't find one and buy it without finding if it will shave, meaning that a modern SE blade fits properly. Many even be a good idea to carry an SE blade somewhere in your wallet when you antiquing for razors. Just slip it in the razor and actually shave a small spot on your arm. Have to laugh about that. When I do go antiquing I usually come home looking a bit strange with some small bare spots on an arm. By doing this you will avoid buying a razor that actually will not work cause of the blade.
Good luck finding the lather catcher. Hope you find one and will enjoy it. By the way, if you click on the link in my signature to my shave den you can see some pix of lather catchers.

Gday Brothers - WELCOME TO TOS!!!! Looking forward to learning and laughing about single edge razors with you!
Possum has good, if not unusual, advice for you. I can imagine him now out and about, shaving his arms in the antique stores. I used to figure that these vintage razors had not been used for years. I always tell my wife who sometimes worries about them having guck and viruses and stuff that 'nahh, this old thing? Ain't been used in decades!!'
Well - now I know better! ;D And I tell ya, out where I live, you start haulin razor blades out in the store and somebody might drop ya on the floor! (Lotsa Hells Angels round here!) But, I must admit, that is actually a great idea. Thanx Possum! Ya never know when you are gonna learn something, even off of a marsupial!
I saw that Tiffany tray you mention the other day Brothers, and I must admit I stared at it for a bit. I am pretty convinced (though not 100%) that that has nothing to do with Gem razors. Who would buy a Tiffany tray to hold a razor worth a couple of dollars? I guess if it was old Mr Zinn himself, perhaps. But it is a bit of a puzzle what that tray would be for. Don't get me wrong, I would love to buy that thing and indeed keep a nice 'leather catcher' in it. But, at a starting price of over 400usd, I think I will pass on that one.
Once again - welcome to TOS - where the secret handshake for members out in the community, is a quick flash of the bald spots on our forearms!
;D

Rocket, Actually got the idea from D.Irving79. When he first got me hooked on SE shaving I would consult with him about a razor on eBay. He would tell me to ask the seller if the blade fit and if there was any misalignment from a bent head. So I did and never got stuck. When I do the antique route I usually find that there is a blade in the razor or I take the one I carry wrapped in my wallet and just shave the arm. I have yet to find one that did not do a good job on the arm. Although the last lather catcher I bought did have a slight imperfection that would allow the one corner of the blade to slide past the blade stop I figured for $12 I could fix it. And after trying one thing I got some advice from this forum and just went ahead and did some very minor bending. Darn thing shave wonderfully now. Now if you don't want to shave your arm you can ask where the "head" is and take the thing in there and drop trow and shave your upper leg or your behind! We do anything to be sure the antique works as it should!

Maybe there are some to look at, maybe some for sale. I get this picture of folks lookin over a razor then droppin their drawers and giving a quick pass on the behind!!!! Hotel staff might be puzzled, but it sure would be a memorable get together!!!! (In all seriousness - great ideas you got there. Well, maybe not shavin my behind, but the rest of it!!!)

Great advice guys, Thanks! Gotta try to remember to take a blade with me next time out. If I don't write myself a note, it ain't gonna happen, even with a note, it's 50 -50! Anyway, I'll let you know when I find something.
