I was told that there are two different kinds of doors for the GEM 1912. A door that is mostly flat on top and one that has a curve to it and is more rounded off. They stated that the one with the rounded off door shaves better than the flat one. Any help with this is appreciated.

The early Open Comb 1912s have a slightly curved head. I find mine a lot milder than the later closed comb models although it is still a superb shaver. Welcome to TOS. Cheers Phil.

The only curved top GEM 1912s that I can think of is the Deluxe (open comb) model. They are quite a bit rare, but can be found on eBay. Several claim that they are better than the newer 1912 pat. GEM. Being someone who in general does better with OC razors I would agree; however, I would bet that there are several who prefer the non-OC razors.
EDIT: I just went through all my GEM razors. I had a nagging feeling that the travel GEM had a curved top and it does. In this case, I don't think it shaves as well as the regular 1912.

Head is closer to the handle (riser? is shorter), slightly shorter handle, head has a bit of curve to it, but it isn't the same profile as the 1912 OC deluxe. All fits in a square clamshell case.

Thanks everybody for all the feedback. I guess the travel GEM was the one he was speaking of.

Just did a quick look through the Waits Compendium and could not find the GEM travel razor being referenced here. I have one and it is in the green metal clamshell case. It has a flat head top and the shorter space between the bottom of the head and the place where the handle screws on.
Waits says that it was made in 1928 with a patent date of 1912. I take it with me on trips as my SE razor and find it shaves well with a Pella blade. Not really much difference between it and my regular 1912 GEMs.

Well this is definitely something new to me - I didn't know about this. I have seen a few in green clamshell cases but didn't pay attention to the razor assuming it was the same as the standard 1912.
Thanx for the info guys!! Thanx for the question Kevtex!!!

I have a few of the travel models.. shave just fine.. Not as good as a Damaskeene that I use for travel though heh. The OC 1912 in opinion is a better shaver then the standard 1912. But the 1912 is an outstanding razor. don't get me wrong on that heh.
