I came across a scent that I have just fallen in love with. It is simply called Florida Water. It came in a lot of shave creams I purchased and I knew nothing about it prior. It is sort of like a Bay Rum type of thing but nice and citrus smelling. It has been around since the early 1800s and was very popular later into the civil war period. So, it has quite the history. And I really, really like it. It doesn't stay strong smelling which I prefer. It just imparts a nice scent after a while but when you put it on it smells just great! It used to be a very popular scent, but these days it is used for some strange purposes. It is quite popular with those like do place spells on people and other witchcraft type stuff. Doesn't bother me though. I love this stuff, and my wife does too. The brand I picked up is GOYA. There are a couple of other brands, and one in particular, Murray and Lanman which is still sold. Very affordable too. Great stuff!! If you ever get a chance, you should try some out - you won't be sorry, and you can rest assured that this is a scent with oodles of history. Wikipedia has this on it:According to the current trademark holders, Lanman & Kemp Barclay, Florida Water was introduced by the New York City perfumer (and founder of the original company) Robert I. Murray, in 1808. In 1835 Murray was joined by David Trumbull Lanman and the firm became Murray & Lanman, then David T. Lanman and Co., and in 1861 became Lanman & Kemp. The company states that their product, now sold under the Murray & Lanman brand, still uses the original 1808 formula, and that the current label is also a slightly modified version of the 1808 original.
Florida Water was regarded a unisex cologne, suitable for men and women alike. Victorian etiquette manuals warned young ladies against the "offensive" impression made by a strong perfume, but Florida Water and Eau de Cologne were recommended as appropriate for all, along with sachets for scenting the linen and fresh flowers in the corsage. Large quantities were also used by barbershops as cologne and aftershave. In the 1880s and 1890s Murray & Lanman Florida Water was advertised as "The Richest of all Perfumes" and "The most Popular Perfume in the World".

Love this stuff.. It can be found at most of the local drug stores at a nice price. Did not know that it had that much of a history. I guess using it after a Williams shave would be proper.

One of my favorites. Great to splash on after working outside in the hot Florida sun.

Well, it doesn't sound like news to you guys!! Up here in Canada I have never seen or heard of it - ever! Like I say it came as a fluke and the guy who sent it to me picked it up in a little ethnic shop in a trendy sort of incense and brass end of town - if that makes sense.
Well - to all you Canucks then - check it out if you can find it! Next time I am in washington state I will stop in at a drug store and pick some up. (The list grows - :VDH, corn huskers lotion, Pinaud talc and bay rum, Florida Water, Gem blades.....hmmm there must be more!)

Bigelow, Theyers or dickensons witch hazel, Alum block, certain types of aqua velva (Don't use it so have no clue as to which ones), osage rub, and of course the most important thing you can't get in Canada............................................................................................Canadian bacon

I looked and looked, but I don't think they are selling the can of worms anymore! I am not into this hoodoo schtick, but the suggestion to spread some nicely scented colognes on my mojo bag might have some merit!!!

As for the Aqua Velva, not to ruffle any feathers here (or should I say fur ) I tried some on in a Walmart once and on the way home my wife made me stop the car and she walked the rest of the way. True story! So, I am not going to try that out again!! Canadian Bacon - now that has always bugged me!! No we can't get that. You can get it on pizza - but it is just plain old bacon - or usually really crappy bacon I should say. Then there is the famous Moosehead lager - the national beer of Canada. Can't stand the stuff!! Nobody drinks it. Canadian Rye Whiskey - now that is a different story. Crown Royal baby - the nectar of the Gods!! The voodoo vixens should use more of that to cast spells and there would be less trouble in their dark spaces!!

Fuzzy Lol I just keep digging my grave deeper with you don't I Fuzz If it is any consolation I don't know aqua velva not because I hate it but because I have not tried it (hmm I'm starting to regret this omission already) I never used after shave until a few months ago and since smelly stuff gives me headaches I went with peppermint and menthol scented items since I know they won't bother me. I will give it a sniff after my other stuff runs out though promise Peace to the Fuzzy one

The voodoo vixens should use more of that to cast spells and there would be less trouble in their dark spaces!! The bigelow is relabeled proraso so if you have tried that bigelow may not wow you. If you haven't tried proraso bigelow is easily obtained (bath and body) and very cheap and makes a nice lather with a clean scent I will warn you that Dickensons has a very pungent smell compared to thayers but IMO works better. According to chemists and such theyers isn't "real" witch hazel because some of their recipes don't include alcohol I really don't concern myself with such technicalities as long as the stuff works.Anyway the pungent smells evaporates quickly with the alcohol and if you use a after shave/balm/ or cologne you won't notice it at all, I also use cotton pads to apply the stuff so it doesn't make my hands smell The osage rub is rocket fuel that stuff is packed with menthol and will freeze your face to the core. I would try looking at any "sally's beauty supply" as you can usually find it there. It may not be the best time use the stuff as it is cold out but come summer that stuff will make you want to bath in it Yes this has always bothered me about other countries I can't get French fries in France, pommes frites maybe but never fries. Can't get Chinese fortune cookies in China and if you ask for Canadian bacon in Canada you get..well regular bacon, the closes I have found to Canadian bacon up there is called...wait for it..ham! You crazy Canucks : - P I mean the only alternative would be that us Americans butchered others languages and used cheap marketing to sell a product irrelevant to the country it's name is derived from. pfft yeah like that would ever happen

Thanx so much for all the info! i think you have just saved me some money. I have both Proraso green and a tube of the red here. I don't mind the red but the green has too much menthol for me. So, if the Bigelow is simply repackaged Proraso i will definately pass. That would do it for me for the Osage as well. I am not really a fan of menthol in creams - I find the Proraso green painful really. So, it sounds like I wouldn't care for the Osage either. Thnx - money saved!!
The Dickensons - that is very interesting. The one thing I like about the Thayers is that I can get alcohol free witch hazel - I really like that over the alcohol type stuff I can get up here. It sounds like the Dickensons wouldn't turn my crank either. I feel much better now and I am not worried about missing out on anything!!
thnx!
