To identify lather catchers, do you just go by the patent date on them, or is there more to it than that? Also, is there a generation that seems to be preferred by most?

My 1911 has a 1900 pat date. I think it shaves better then the 1910 that I have. I have heard that the older wooden handle ones shave great. Any of the models around 1908 to 11 seem to be really popular.

I have one marked 1900 that does not have the bar that swings over, and I scored one last night that is marked 1900 that does have the bar. Is the best way to identify them to just post pictures?

sometimes its more than patent dates, sometimes its not. i can identify them maybe the same way achim can with gillettes, or chris with injectors. hopefully that was a good comparison definitely post a picture(s).

This is the one I bought yesterday: The other one looks almost identical but without the bar that flips over the blade.

Very cool Dave! Thanks! Is 1910 the manufacture date then, or is it a model designation?

Very cool Dave! Thanks! Is 1910 the manufacture date then, or is it a model designation? Bump for Dave's attention . I'm pretty sure he meant year of manuf. but I'd love to know too! I see there's a thread on dating GEM's, I hope it's the one he was talking about .

As I understand that is a manufacturing date. The model is Gem Junior which means it was made for the modern blades. Again as I understand it.
