Hello Everybody!!! I believe Dave Irving remarked on another forum that he had modified an Auto Strop razor to be just a stropper for other SE and DE blades. I would like to inquire as to if instructions or a video detailing this are available online. Regards, KP

I vaguely remember that he talked about that. Not sure if he ever got around to a video. Would be a waste of a good razor. I have a ER stropper and can see no advantage to using it with modern blades.

Thank you for the reply. I am getting into carbon steel blades and would like to have a stropper of some kind. The Valet Auto Strop was part of a lot of used razors I got for a song on ebay. Depending on what the mod called for, I thought it might be a neat project for a razor I am not currently shaving with. What is your opinion of the ER Stropper? KP

Dave had initiated a thread where he talked about modifying an AS to be used only as a stropper, but he never followed up on it. I recall posting a few reply's to the thread hoping to prompt him, but to no avail.
I recall having this discussion once with WCHNU some time ago as I too wanted to strop up some modern blades. WCHNU said pretty much the same as he does here, that it is not a practical use of time.
I have to agree. At the time I figured I would go ahead anyway and tried multiple stropper formats - the ER stropper, a reconditioned Kriss Kross, an Allegro, and a small german stropper, the BB.
I really didn't find any discernable benefit going through the trouble. Certainly the PTFE's would just scratch the strop. I chewed up a pretty good Valet strop using the ER on it with PTFEs. No difference in sharpness I could see other than perhaps the blade was dulled somewhat. Same with the carbons, I just couldn't improve the blade enough to make it worthwile.
I shouldn't have doubted WCHNU, that wascawy wabbit!
However, that said, perhaps I just suck at stropping SE blades!!! You may want to go for it yourself and see how you do. Personally, I like a nice sharp stubble swatter and prefer a new blade. It might be different had I had any luck with stroppers, but alas......

Even the Carbon steel blades feel duller when stropped. The tool it self is neat and love the thought of working a blade into a few more shaves. It just does not work. I keep the ER stropper cause it is a piece of the connection to the past. Other then that it is worthless.
