Ivan, Any tips on getting the Rolls blades good and sharp? I have two of them and one I want to send along to a certain "RABBIT" to try out. But I want to be sure the blade is good and sharp. Bryce, I'm no expert but in my experience just make sure you've a chip-free edge that it's clean and ready to go to the hone. I've had one gentleman tell me despite following manual to a T he still couldn't get it shaveready. This was with the OEM hone btw. Since I wasn't comfortable with the idea of using the Rolls hone ( not that there's anything wrong with it ) I used what I Was most comfortable with-the Norton since I've been using them with straights and first couple set of Rolls. The third rolls I have now I've managed to get to shaveready. It's smooth. Much smoother than my other 2 Rolls because I've 80 some shaves with both compared to 5 or so shaves with the 3rd one. It's not bad considering I'm nearing 90th shave. I wanted to see how long the edge would last without having to hone but only strop before and after each shave and really impressed with the results.

I would say 99% of the time. The only DE I use now is a Slim Adjustable, set on 8 or 9. It's OK, but I think I do it just because I have it and for a change. Nothing I own comes "close" to my 1912 ER. Pun intended.....

I've got 5 SEs, 2 Injectors, and 6 DEs. Between SE and Injector, I'd say that's about 70% of my shaves. I just like it better.

I use a SE razor every week. Over-all I use the SE 75% of the time vs. 25% for the DE. I could be happy using SE exclusively but since I have several DE razors I want to get some use out of them.

It's gotten to be pretty much 100% for me also. I'll have to admit that I got my first Gem as a novelty...until I discovered that SE shaving is the way to go for a consistently clean and comfortable shave. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with all of the DE razors that have been languishing in my drawer for months now. __________ Jeff

Maybe twice a week I'll fiddle around with a DE. Mostly though, I use the SEs. For me, they give a closer shave. I'm of the opinion that they were overtaken by DEs due to the convinience factor, not because DEs shaved closer.

If I shave every day, I use SE ~40% as I only get 3 shaves out of a blade. So 3 days in, I put down the SE with disgust and do the remaining 4 shaves with a different DE razor and blades for variety, and I've got a lot of DE blades I have already bought to get through anyway. If I don't shave every day, it's normally 50%, one week SE, one week DE, switching to the SE and a new blade whenever I want a really close shave. The DE just gets me by for every day regular presentable shaves, and I have to use them since I have so many blades and razors, the SE is the only razor that gets me a great shave though. But most of the time, I don't have the time for a great shave anyway.

I use the Ted Pella PTFE coated GEM blade and get 7 really great shaves with them. I also hand strop the blade after each shave. Of course I change razors for each shave to the hand stropping is rather easy for me. Seems a shame to only get great shaves 40% of the time when you could be getting them 100% of the time. As for not having time to get a good shave you need to adjust your daily shaving routine to provide more time to shave. You will also be able to shave quicker once you have your technique down really good. It used to take me 25-30 minutes to shave (4 passes including a buffing pass) and I have refined my technique to the point where it not takes me 15-20 minutes. And don't let the excess blades and razors keep you from great shaves. There are plenty of guys out there who will buy the DE razors and blades you don't want.
