I always have an emergency kit packed. Odds and ends of things that I think will make it easier for me if something bad this way comes. I live in South Louisiana and hurricanes are rough at times. Other then that there are also Summer time thunderstorms and such. Fishing in the Bayou's I always carry extra items just in case.
I also keep extra canned food as such. Canned meats, dry beans, rice, canned veggies, lots of Ramen Noodles. I store water in large jugs just in case.
I wonder how many others keep a kit around.

In the winter time I keep an "emergency kit" in the car. It's really just just a couple of bottles of water, a wind up flash light, a big pack of "Sturgis" brand beef jerky, a pretty bare bones basic medical kit (a couple of band-aids in a few sizes, some stretchy wrap stuff, gauze pads, maybe a couple of other things I think... nothing that expires and I haven't had to open it yet) some chemical heating packs, and my phone's car charger. It's all wrapped up in a blanket and tied up with a big ol' bundle of rope. White out blizzard conditions can pop out of nowhere around here and every last item in the "kit" can be used as "survival" gear.

Yes and No. I keep an emergency battery charger in both cars. I have a habit of leaving my lights on in the car and draining my battery. Especially early in the spring when I go to the golf course at dawn.
Also almost always have a snack box in the car with me. Slim Jims, cheese peanut butter crackers, granola bars and of course a couple bottles of water.
As for in the house, not much other than a small first aid kit. I heat and cook with gas so if the winter weather knocks out the power I can still get some heat in the house and do some cooking. Always have plenty of food in the house and in the freezer. Do have to be careful if I would lose power in the summer as the food in the freezer would soon thaw but in the winter just take the stuff outside to keep it frozen.
In case of a real emergency our small town has a pretty good emergency plan for helping folks out. Nice large firemen's club that would provide shelter and cooking of food with use of generators, also they would help local churches get power to provide other shelters when needed.
As for shaving, well that would be one of the first thing that I would do without in such cases. If I can't do it right then I won't do it at all.

I saw this bit about an emergency kit. I live in an earthquake zone on Vancouver Island on the west coast of canada. There was a tsunami on the island in 64 that made quite a mess. Now with this Japan thang..... I have started to put together an emergency kit. A quick grab kit would be good - particularly with some cash, id, meds, stuff like that. I have enough crap in the house I really don't need to buy anything particular - but water would be handy to have at ready, and, well, I gotta think this through I guess! Hopefully I pull it off BEFORE I need it!

I recently ordered water purification tablets and a filter to add to my kit. I had some tabs but these should be an upgrade.
