While I really love the aggressiveness of my open comb micromatic, another razor is really showing me the love. It's my Gem Jr. When I want an easy, comfortable shave I have been reaching more and more for my Gem Jr. I'm going up north tomorrow to spend some quality time with my fiancee, and I just decided what is coming with me. I won't be taking my brush and mug, but instead my every man jack brushless shave cream. The kicker is that last time I was up there a local store had a few glass bottles of ice blue AV. I hope their still there.

I would agree that is one of the best razors. Never much use a brushless cream. Hope you have a safe trip.

On the advice of the folks here I got a Gem 1912, and love it. I haven't touched a DE since I received it. I've been playing with the injector the last couple of days, but tomorrow it's 1912 time.

I've got a '12 GEM Travel razor kit that I will take with me when I am flying. But I will not skimp when it comes to my brush and soap. Can get away with no mug as I will face lather.
Take one of my Prairie Creations shave sticks or my Tabac shave stick, my C&E BBB in a medicine bottle and use the hotel provided plastic cup to soak and put the brush in during the shave. When I go to my daughter's in Chicago I have a big mug I keep there. Who knows I just may take a boar brush and a tub of soap out there next time and just let it there. I already keep some SE blades there too.

I just haven't been able to get a travel kit together yet. I want to get a shave stick, but I haven't yet because they just aren't available locally and I can't justify shipping for just that. The brushless is not bad, very slick, but I do like to use a brush. When I get a shave stick I will probably get another VDH boar for travel. I can get them locally. Oh, and the trip is on hold because of car problems....

Car troubles, not good. Screws up vacation plans because the car is not working properly and screws it up after you get the car fixed cause you don't have any money to go on vacation. Catch - 22.
Try this for the shave stick. Get a puck of Williams, a used deodorant stick container (or buy a cheap deodorant stick and dump the deodorant). Grate the Williams and pack the soap in the stick container. This can be done with most soaps that can be grated. I did it with a small travel size deodorant stick to see how I would like a shave stick. Worked good but could not get enough soap in the little container.
Keep on the look out though next time you need some blades or soaps/creams. Order a shave stick then. There are lots of vendors who will offer shave sticks. Bullgoose has name brands. TSD, Prairie Creations has them as well as Mamma Bear's and Em's Place among the artisan soap makers.

Some brushless creams really are worth the while. The Ingram Green is a nice cream. I've heard good things about the few others that are still being produced but the IG is the totality of my brushless cream experience.
Hope you get those car problems sorted.

Well, I got the car sorted enough to get to see my fiancee for a week. I spent the entire week with my gem jr., and Williams shave soap. The blades I got from CVS seem to be even smoother than the Walgreens gem blades, plus they are cheaper. It was a darn good week.

Yes, I got my hands on an Arko and a Palmolive shave stick. I've used the Arko for face lathering, and love it. In fact I've not used much else since then. That and my VDH brush are an awesome combination. I'm saving the Palmolive for travel since I also got a nice vintage colgate tube that it fits in perfectly.
