As I pointed out a I sent a VDH starter kit out to a young friend of mine. I have already had him watch the Mantic Videos and his first shave with them went well. Here is a little guide to how I do things for a face lather with a soap and boar brush.
Step 1: I soak the brush in hot water in the sink.
Step 2: after the brush soaks awhile and gets soft shake the excess water out. no fancy three shakes or ring out.. just get most of the water out I . like to use a fairly dry brush to start.
Step 3: start building a nice paste on the brush. Get plenty of soap from the puck onto the brush.
Step4: Dip the tip of the brush into the water. Do not add much water at a time.
Step 5: start working the soap paste into a lather on your face. If it is too dry just dip the tip of the brush in the water and work until you get a good lather.
Nice and easy. This is how I use all my soaps.

I bet you stole that method from Mantic! ;D
Actually Fuzzy I do a similar thing. I just start with a bit wetter brush than you. I get a ton of "paste" you call it, "lather" I call it on the brush. Does make a bit of mess on the soap itself. Then I take the brush to the face and really build lather.
When I use a shave stick, and that is becoming my favorite way to use soap, I just apply a good amount of soap on the face so you can see really well and then work the lather with the brush.
I seem to get enough lather for 3 passes either way. On occasion I have to get a bit more water on the brush for the third pass just to get a nice lather on the face.
What kind of brush are you using, boar or badger. I usually use a boar brush for soaps but recently tried a refurbed ER with a silvertip knot by GN. Rodd set the knot a bit deeper in the handle and the density of the brush seems to make some really good soapy face lathering.

Possum - what stick soaps do you use, or have you tried? I have only tried the Arko and find that the smell makes me want to grow a beard.

That was the first one I tried and I liked using the sticks. Then I got hold of Prairie Creations Rose and Nag Champa sticks. Love them both. I still enjoy using the traditional soap pucks and loading the brush and then face lathering. But the shave sticks are great for travel and for a change of pace for face lathering. Have never tried sticks like Arko etc. Just never interested in those soaps. I seem to like the artisan soaps better. Have done a lot of artisan creams too but am getting tired of them They just do not always make a great a lather as my T&H 1805, the three C&E creams, and a Trumpers Rose and Salter's Rose. As these run out I am going to cut back on the creams and get some TOBS tubs to use.

I gotta get me a shaving stick. I don't know what is with Canadian shavers. Stores don't stalk squat except multiblades and canned goo. There is one knife store that is trying to get a market niche with dovo straights, run of the mill merkurs and col conk soaps, so if I am in a real bad pinch I can at least get a glycerin soap puck (except of course for the ever available Williams puck - the only puck 99.9% of Canadians has EVER seen) which is better than a kick in *ss. But, these sticks. I keep forgetting to look for them when I end up in the US. I was in SanFran and Seattle last month and had a blast buying up all the VDH I could find. I also got a tiny bit lucky in some antique stores. But, I forgot totally about the sticks. Next time!!!!! I will be cruisin for stix!! Erasmic - has a cooool name. It is so weird when you can't have something you hear about all the time there is a certain degree of torture. A sense that I am missing out on something SO important!! Hehe. I ended up paying through the nose a while ago for some Bigelow cream to get shipped up (oh yeah, Proraso is the only other thing you can really find) and much to my chagrin it was repackaged Proraso. I guess ya gotta be careful what ya wish for eh??!!! Anyhoo Spinyeel - I hope you enjoy sorting out how to use the Erasmic (ooooOOOoo - such a cool name!! )
