This little auction buy arrived today. Now it needs some cleaning and I took a chance on it being so dirty but I believe it will be a very nice buy. The blades in the wrapper are NOS. Wilkinson Sword Co. Empire Model Set London, England Manufactured c.1929-1938 and c.1946-1950

Very nice scoop!! I love those Wilkies. They are such a great design and the cases and presentation were always top notch. Super bonus getting the cardboard shipper to go with it.
You gonna try and slice some hairs with it??
(I have an early 30's Empire and it came with a few blades. They were sort of dull but I stropped one up anyway and muscled my way through an entire shave. It pulled and tugged all the way - but I managed acceptable results with an 80 year old blade and holder, so I was pleased as punch! Only the once though!)

I got a 7 day set back in Dec and tried with what looked like the sharpest blade on that one but only got through a 1st pass. It pulled like a son of a gun. This set has 3 unwrapped blades so I think I am going to open one up and give it a go. I plan on sending a few off to get honed back up along with a Henckel's wedge blade.

Wonderful set Kevin! I love my empire set just because it feels well made very heavy and chunky but with style and class of that era. I lucked out and got a set with blades that were also NOS (though not wrapped as yours are) and managed to get a comfortable first shave. I haven't had time to shave with it again sadly as I have been very busy with other projects. I can't wait to modify my VAS strop to fit it though and give it another go ;D I still have no clue if these blades can be honed yet, the instructions say that they are meant to be disposed of but I really can't see how a piece of wedge steel like that couldn't be honed back up Even if those blades don't shave for you Kevin be sure and just run the cylinder comb on the razor up and down your face. It feels really good almost like a message IMO ^_^ Keep us posted on those blades your sending off to get honed!

some of those are a full time job More like moving furniture around (no I don't know why I just do whatever it takes to not get yelled at ), going to school, and practicing my honing skills I am going to try do some restorations on some old straights soon though so that should be an opportune time to mod the VAS strop to fit the Wilkinson ;D

I know about that moving furniture idea - sometimes it may be easier to move a grand piano up a flight of stairs than put up with the grief you can get from not helping do it. Uh huh, testify!
Sounds like you are really getting into the str8s and learning to hone them puppies. I have tried some, but I don't really have the correct tools and perhaps, the patience neither! I intend one day though to pick up some proper stones and give it a shot. I would love to hear how your experiences go. Rock on Whoosh Man!
(WE NOW RETURN YOU TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED THREAD - THANK YOU)
