Can you post a larger pix. Would love to see just how much like the Rolls the Darwin really is.

It will be interesting to see how well it shaves if you can get it shave ready. I assume that the hone is on the inside of one of the tops ala the Rolls.
Do you hone and strop it like the Rolls? It looks like the last pix shows that the head can be attached to the handle in a way that reminds me of an Old GEM lather catcher with a stropping handle.
By the way, it is quite a good looking razor.

Dridecker - is that your set? If it is could you post a scan of the instructions for it?? I have a set and would love to print a copy of the instructions to include with it - mine doesn't have one, nor the shipper, nor the wonderful honing and stropping pastes. I am jealous!! Must find pastes....must find pastes....must find........

Just a comment too on this shaver regarding similarity to the Rolls. I was surprised to see that the hone itself is also a leather strop and not a stone like with the Rolls. That is why it came with stropping and honing pastes. They figured out long ago that a good chrom ox on leather is good enough for sharpening. Spinyeel, you will need to come up with some chromium oxide paste if you want to sharpen your blade with the set. I have not yet tried it because I haven't wanted to take the time afterwards to clean up!! I have some here for str8s and I have been tempted from time to time. And, Rolls stropping paste is fine for the strop if you have it. So, you don't really need the original paste set to sharpen.
If you go for it, let me know how it goes!! It might motivate my lazy butt to do the same! (Actually, I am a little hesitant too to work these old leathers too hard. I have never seen replacements, and the razors are not plentiful enough to find a crappy one with good leathers for replacements. I suppose you could cut new ones and install them for using as some folks have done with the Rolls.)
Cool razor anyhoo!!

O.K. Dumb question of the week. How do you rotate the strop hone thingy? Mine won't move.

Okay here's some info on the Darwin. Made by Darwins Ltd aka Darwin Ltd from c1932 into the 1950s. Made in England. Two models the DeLuxe and the Universal. The DeLuxe has a stainless steel case and the Universal had a chrome plated case. Hope that helps with some info about your Rolls competitor. Darwin advertised this razor to be the "Aristocrat of the Bathroom". Funny, I though we were each the "aristocrat" of our own bathrooms. Go figure!

Worked it out. ;D It was so clogged up with gunk that the hone-strop mechanism refused to slide out. Now to try and get the blade shave ready. It could be quite a task.

This razor is a fun little puzzle eh? When I first got mine it took me a while to sort out how to access the hone. Once you see, it is easy as pie! But, before that is was sort of a Chinese Puzzle for me!! Good top hear you got the mechanism moving. Sounds like a good cleaning probably took care of it. How are you going to do the honing? Do you plan on using a paste with it? I am looking forward to seeing how it goes for you. As I said before, I haven't yet used mine, but I darn well should! Great info on the two models Possum!! I had no idea there were two. I will have to dig around now and check out the differences. Unfortunately, now I am short one!! And, I just have to come up with the honing and strop paste kit in a box like in the pic above!! Although, that will be a mission for a long time I suspect.

Neat little razor thanks for sharing. I actually got one of those "crayons" a while back when I bought a lot of old razor stuff and racked my brain trying to figure out what it was for since the packaging was in French. By the time I figured it out I had misplaced the darn thing I am still a little confused about how this thing operates though, so does it have a mechanism like a Rolls? Or does it simply house a strop and paste and then you use it like a SR Either way it is a nice looking razor and I like the open comb blade holder/handle. In my experience pasted strops are comparable to finishing/polishing/barber hones so if the blade feels pretty sharp and just needs a little work I say have at it with the pasted strop. However if the blade is dull as dirt you may want to try putting it to a hone as trying to hone a blade on a pasted strop can leave you with an uneven bevel if you are not careful. Good luck and keep us posted on your endeavor
