I don't think enough people seen Dave's announcement about the new TOS Chat! So I'm posting this in hopes of making more people aware of its existence The link is located on the main page of the original safety theoriginalsafety.com/chat.htmlI will probably drop in there around 11:00PM (23:00) PST as that is when I am usually most active on TOS. You can leave the window open and change your setting to "Away" if you don't want to miss any conversations while you surf or go to work however. (This part should go in the Box forum I know but while I'm here and all) Maybe we can assign a certain day and time reserved for teaching others about SE's such as time dating certain brands and so forth if we see enough activity on it As always Thanks are in order for Dave starting this awesome forum and for constantly improving it, along with its members who continue to make it grow VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

Good job MB! I missed it so your thread made me aware. However, I am afraid I am one of those digitally challenged types. Windows blocks the software saying it doesn't recognize it. Is this because it wants to load Java or? ?? What the heck do I do??

Lol who would think a person as crafty with posting funny images as you would be bad a computers Yes the chat uses Java so if you do not have it you will have to install it www.java.com/en/There are links there that will let you know if you already have Java and also aid you if have any problems when loading it Also if you have any firewalls or adblocker software be sure to add the TOS chat URL to the exception/permitted list

Thanks whoosh for the reminder of the chat feature. I had to go find some plug-ins for my Firefox-Linux setup. Got it running now.
I like the idea of a set time for chat but I think that maybe 11 pm PST is a bit late for a lot of us. That makes it 2 am for those of us in the EST zone. And Fuzzy is at work then and can't always join in.
So what I suggest is that we in some way let folks know about the chat feature and find guys who are willing to chat at various times of the day. That way all can be part of the chats.
I do know it will be hard to get guys to commit to a certain time. I have had loads of experience with chat rooms. Am an admin at a baseball related site and when we had a chat room we found that guys would say it was great to have and I'll be there but few of them showed up. Even when we had a daily or near daily gametime chat session.
Hope that you can get yourself some chat partners and give the chat system a good work out and let us know how it works. If you do it about 3-4 hrs earlier I will be happy to join in.
Happy Chatting.

I just did a system update over the weekend - bye bye Jaunty Jackalope, hello Karmic Koala.
Looks like the chat window works now.. We'll see about the whole mark yourself Away and be able to see what you missed thing. With as many of us as there are, I don't know how often we would be on at the same time...

I think two of my statements got combined and gave the wrong impression. What I meant to get across was that I will usually be on at 11pm not that that is when we should have a designated get together : - P No the designated get together time and day would be chosen by the party giving the lesson or presentation of course. I was just suggesting that when the chat took off and people started just having friendly banter that there would be a day or time that was reserved for serious discussion and/or learning of SE and wet shaving in general for new people who may have questions they wanted to get answers to instantaneously rather than make a post and wait for responses. Hope this made clearer sense Edit- It appears that if you are idle for too long you will time out regardless if you are set to away or not. So I guess leaving the window open and going to work is out

These troubleshooting tips are for Windows users someone else will have to fill in for Mac and Unix as I don't have any experience with those. 1. If you are using firefox try logging in with (shudder) Internet Explorer if it loads you need to update firefox 2. Make sure you update your java www.java.com/en/3. Make sure to add the chat URL to the allowed list on your firewall or adblocker programs 4. If all else fails try the sites troubleshooter support.addoninteractive.com/index.php?action=trouble_shooterwill add more tips as I become aware of them

From linux: firefox works, but again - make sure your Java is up to speed. I am currently running the newest version of firefox at home on Ubuntu 9.10 and chat works without any major hitch.
At work, it looks like the java script is blocked someplace. If I try to run it through firefox I get java errors and through IE - complete lock up. I will try it again this afternoon during plan.

Just another question since this thread is on the topic of computer geeky stuff! I recently had a nasty compromise on my computer and have been running IE. Is Firefox any better from a security standpoint? Less worms and bugs and such? Or, is it just 'nicer' to use? I haven't the brain power to waste on learning more for the sake of 'nice', but if it is for better security I would do it. What say ye geeky ones?

Your INTERNET browser is just a program to make using the INTERNET more coherent and functional much like an operating system. The security will depend on what websites you visit and what safety practices you use that will deter evil doers. Tips: Have both a software and hardware firewall software-windows firewall, outpost, norman etc. hardware- most modems or routers today have a firewall built in this would act as a hardware firewall always make sure you are on a secure web page before entering sensitive information like credit card numbers. A secure web page will have https:// as opposed to the normal http:// Always log off accounts that contain sensitive info like your E-mail or bank site. Just closing the window can sometime leave you logged in which is much easier for someone to to gain access to those accounts Never give out sensitive info to untrusted or unknown websites or individuals. Your bank will never ask you for your account information etc. Never even open e-mails from unknown or untrusted individuals. If it looks like spam it is spam, if it isn't spam then they will e-mail you back with a more detailed title so you know it isn't spam. Check your bank account weekly and make sure to look for suspicious activity and alert your bank at once. The sooner you report it the better chance you have to prevent from happening again. Don't know about a website? Google it, if someone in the world who has been burned by that site has access to a forum or blog they will definitely let the WHOLE WORLD here about it. safeguard your computer from viruses etc by having programs that specialize in each category that are know to work well with each other: malwarebytes(anti maleware), avg(antivirus), spybot(antispyware) Never store personal or sensitive info on your main hard drive, Buy an external hard drive load the info on it then disconnect it from your computer and store the hard drive in a secure place like a safe. Much like your house there is No impenetrable defense against bad people if someone wants in bad enough they will get in. The point is deterrence by making your computer as hard to crack as possible. This will make them move on to easier prey.

I checked all that ... hit the chat button with the Firefox and it just shuts down.. the IE is a little better it just locks up. Fuzzy Fuzzy did you try the troubleshooter link I posted? One thing is to make sure java is enabled In firefox go to TOOLS>OPTIONS>CONTENT and making sure the box is checked The only other thing I can think of right now is to empty your cache and try reloading java

Another Linux user you are. And Ubuntu too boot. I am still using Jaunty and plan to stay that way a bit longer. From what I read before Christmas was that there were still a lot of bugs in Karmic. Maybe upgrade just before the next update comes up. I am running the Jaunty version of Netbook Remix on my netbook that I am typing on right now. Seems to work well for me. Need to try the chat on this machine and see if I have to upgrade the Java for the NBR. If I have problems I will seek out help from my son-in-law. He uses some of Sun's software in his work and has spent some time at their home offices and most likely has contacts that can help me out. Let me know how you like Karmic. I may upgrade on my desktop sooner if you think the bugs are gone.
