With a modified modern blade in a VAS, it shaves too close. There are usually little red spots and occasionally irritation. No problem, I just packed them away to keep for their wonderful metal cases.
I recently received some Feather SE blades (Thanks again Fuzzy). However, now the VAS is extremely mild. No weepers, no irritation, no BBS.
I have tried flat against face which feels odd and a 20-30 degree angle like I would use for GEM, Rolls, or other style razors.
What am I messing up on?

Justin,
What model VAS are you using?
Also, what modern SE blade are you using?
One thing you can try is to go back to the modified blade...when you are pulling the lever down to fit the blade through the pins, don't go all the way down thus leaving more of a gap between blade and guard. That should make it less aggressive and I have even seen this on VAS instructions in some sets.
Hope that helps, let us know!

Ya know, I have had this experience with the Feather blades too. I have not managed decent shaves really with it. It is too mild and I too had no weepers or irritation - not that I want that, but it can be a sign that at least the darn thing worx!!
Wondering what razor you are using?? I have several models but only used the earlier model C without any of the little stick out nubs that only fit in the cut outs. So, the razor I have used would fit a solid modified blade - ya with me??
I have been thinking that I should try a newer Valet - I know some folks have talked about good shaves with a Valet and were talking about those newer ones.
Which one did you use??

I need to look up the Valet model numbers. All but one of my Valet can take a modified GEM blade and don't have the cutouts. The only one that I have that has the cutouts is the Valet that I modified with a dremmel to take a regular non-modified GEM blade. That one is a vicious mean razor. Its probably getting even with me. However, now, it can't take a Feather SE. (I saw another thread that indicated that the Canadian made one that I modified was more aggressive - so that may be part of its blood thirsty nature as well)

the mC requires (most of the time) a very steep angle. i dont even use these anymore b/c of how risky it is to injure yourself with one. try a mid 1910s - mid 1920s model. theyre just as cheap.

I may have to do that. I made two changes today - 1) I took an extra WTG pass and 2) I used a steeper angle. Much better results - mostly BBS

They started adding those little stumps later on to force people to use their blades because the competition was eating into their blade business. However, the clever competition started making blades with cutouts that would work with the razor - just like the new feather Haney blades.
