with that curve in there... is this meant for a wedge blade? If so, then it is cool that you can modify a modern blade to work in it.

I tried another blade and it doesn't need to be bent. It fits nicely. Also, I tried a "standard sized" wedge blade and the clasp, not the little tab, can't go over the blade to be closed. Looking at: www.collectorsencyclopedia.com/default.aspit does indeed seem that this razor was ment for wedge blades.

Very nice catch!!! I likeee!!!
I have seen an advertisement for this razor which was being advertised as the 'New Gem' in 1902. The Collectors Encyclopedia web site lists the manufacturing date for the one they have as 1900. I imagine though that you wouldn't advertise a two year old razor as 'New' - but ya never know. It has to be in that time frame somewhere.
It was marketed along with their automatic stropper which would indicate it was intended for a wedge blade.
Very perty indeed! I love those Gem Cutlery Co. ones.

My research says that a razor that looks like yours is advertised in 1901 and was produced until 1904. There were about 7 different cases and models, based on case and accessories. And definitely designed for the wedge blade.
It sure looks nice and I like the idea of using a modern SE blade in it. By the way, that is a great looking handle you have made for it.
Enjoy your shaves and let us know how they go.

I you're willing I could make 2 or 3 and ship them to one of you and you do the rest of the shipping in America? No promises theoriginalsafety.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=95&page=2I must tell you that it was made with a dremel, not a lathe so it may be a little uneven. And the screw is metric so it screws only about 3/4 of the turn but it is tight. Plus I must see if I can find these metal caps that go on top. Maybe it's the NEW gem, the same way the Gillette is NEW. But since it's using the same kind of blades (wedge) the only thing left is design.

Awesome looking Razor yet another one to add to the list ;D I'm glad the handle you made also fit this Gem's head as well still can't believe you managed that with only a dremel
