I am having a problem with this thing. Using modified Ted Pella blades in the razor. Seems that I just can't get a good shave with it. Also is seems to be scraping rather than cutting the hairs. Quite often get weepers and even a nick or two.
Could it be my technique? Anyone have any secrets on technique for this very interesting razor? I would love to be able to master the darn thing so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've found they shave O.K. with a modified S/E blade, but they don't even come close to a Gem or Ever Ready razor as far as performance is concerned. ;)Something about the head design. ???I've tried Dave's honing and stropping N.O.S blades with reasonable results.Good, but not great. Cheers Phil.

Phil,
You just confirm my thoughts and experience. Not a bad shaver just does not get that BBS shave like the other GEMs and ERs.
Will keep on using it on occasion though. Dave would be upset if I didn't.

I have modified blades to go in the auto-strop. I have modified an auto-strop to take regular blades. However, in order to get as close with it as I do a Gem or Ever-ready, I end up with irritation and nicks.
With that being said, I love the metal coffin case and use them to toss in a different razor when traveling.

i have a feeling it might be your technique. you might need to bring the razor head a little closer to your face.

I've been using a Valet with modified SEs for a couple weeks now and have discovered a few things.
In regards to head angle, the sweet spot is very small and hard to find. If you're not in the sweet spot you can easily tell as the open comb will leave lines in the shaving cream. Keep modifying the angle until the cream is cleanly wiped away.
After three passes all visible stubble is removed but felt stubble still persists.
The strop doesn't really seem to do much good but I'm still experimenting with it. It's certainly fun to play with though.

bryce, youre not still using the 1912 are you?? Dave, You bet I am. Not on a regular basis though cause I have a bunch of other SE razors too. In fact I used on on Saturday and will use another today and my third on on Wednesday as my rotation goes.
