Dave after getting off the phone with you I looked at this thing. It does say Gem Junior on the back of the head along with Gem Cutlery Co. M'F'RS. with a pat date of Aug 28 1900. The ribbon on the inside of the lid reads Gem Cutlery Co. New York and the lining is purple. Attachments:

I have a silly question....how does the stropper work? Do you just slide your blade through there?

I have a silly question....how does the stropper work? Do you just slide your blade through there? Pretty much... the stropper fits into the end of the bottom handle piece. you slide the blade in and it holds it in place to be worked on the strop.

I'm always jealous reading about the GEMS folks are using, and which are their favorites. I have only ever tried a 1912 (ornate and baton) as I have yet to get my mitts on an earlier one. I really want to try a lather catcher style. It will happen. The hunt is ongoing. (I keep tripping over other stuff and blowing my budget over and over!! ) I must admit that since I don't have others yet to try, my fav GEM is, well, not a GEM, but rather an ER 1914. What can I say? Actually, the ER is my best shaving razor for me so far. If I were forced to pick the best razor I have, it would be that crusty little, brassed up, scratched to sh*t little silver thang! (Sorry if this is blasphemy in the GEM thread!!!)

thats a 1911 gem junior. probably my favorite of the jrs. very nice It says 1900 pat date and does not have the bar that comes down just the side clips and the clip that clicks over the back of the blade. like the 1900 superior you sent me. It is a 1911? And Yes I do know how to use it LOL Fuzzy

That is a beautiful set! Dave, you've dated this as a 1911, and have told me that mine is a 1908 (razor only, no case or handle extension, but it is gorgeous!). Care to share the wealth on how you determine the dates? ;D I know, it's probably a bit more involved than you can do justice to in a short post (part of why you're writing the book I suspect? ), but a pointer or two perhaps? Guessing it is the markings? Mine:
