Does anyone here shave with a Rolls Razor on a regular basis. Just (finally) picked one up and am about to have a go with it. Seems easy to sharpen and it shaves my arm well.

I don't use one on a regular basis. But I have used them (just used one yesterday). If you have a good blade and the hone is flat and lapped, it is easy to maintain them. However, when you have a bad blade, it takes forever to get it into shaving condition. I have one blade that has been brought back to the point that it can take arm hairs off, but when shaving, it can't get BBS results. Its getting closer, but I am probably up to 2,000 passes on the hone. My other Rolls shaves much better and was ready to go almost from the start. I see these in a lot of antique stores and have found dollar sets that were missing the hone or strop, handle, or blade or had a damaged hone/blade. I found a $8 set which was excellent (my good set). If possible, I would always inspect one of these before buying. A bent blade is hard to tell from a picture and the hone could be cracked (both of these would be caused by letting the blade slap too bard when honing) Some links: wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Rolls_Razorwww.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/3541/Rolls_Page.htm

I find the Roll's to be a reasonable razor to use as a weekend shaver, but the Gem's and Ever Ready's are maintainance free and give a closer shave IMHO.They are well worth the effort to get sharp though. ;D

I've got one too. It's a great piece of engineering but only an occasional shaver for me. Fun, though...

I've collected 6 of these razors that vary in condition from very good to excellent. It was about two months ago that I decided to shave with a Rolls and was surprised with how easy it is to prepare the blade (honing and stropping), and get great results from what some people call a "piece of a Straight on a stick"!!! It is now #1 in my razor rotation.

I've got two of them. One has a cracked hone but believe it or not I can still use the hone. But the blade itself is not too good. I have taken Dave's advice and honed the the blade like for hours it seems. Still not really sharp enough to use on my face. It does work well on my arm though.
The other one is in really nice shape and the blade does work much better. I use it on occasion and find it to give me a fairly decent though not BBS shave. I do not blade buff with this thing, no way, too easy to hack myself to pieces.
But when I do use the Rolls it is an adventure that I really enjoy.

Glad to see this thread, I just picked one up on the 'Bay (bought from Phil Krumholz too, the Man!). Got it in a lot with a couple old neck mirrors and a couple other random items. Hoping it's complete, I presume it is. Only cost $2.99, but then the shipping was just under nine bucks. Still a bargain if it's complete and in the condition/shape I am hoping!
Pics when it arrives (I love pics!).
