Some hunting seasons are open here in South Louisiana, and more will be opening soon. How many Us here enjoy hunting? Or mayb just shooting in general. What is your favorite rifle or shotgun? Is the season starting out good for you.
For me I love to hunt. Even though I do not go as much as I should. My first love is Squirrel hunting. Some of you may know that I lost my Grand Father back in June following a car accident. A lot of my best hunting memorys center around hunting tree rats over a dog, and still hunting them, with him.
At one time I was a avid Duck hunter. That has kinda gone down hill in past years due to the death of a few hunting buddies. Hard to find good public land back home to hunt also. Around here it is not as hard, but I do not know the swamps and such as well as I need to.
So let's hear from y'all. I already know about a few folks here, but would love to know more.

Fuzzy,
An interesting question. Don't see much about hunting in the other shave forums. I am no longer a hunter but do have a few memories of my time in the woods.
Most not really great though. Did do some duck hunting until I was sprayed with shot by some "nut" trying to shoot a canada goose. The goof did not realize the difference in size between a goose and a mallard. Goose about twice the size. So instead of hitting what he wanted, he kept pumping his shotgun with no regard as where the shot was going,
And I also got very scared with deer hunting. A guy was killed about a mile from where I used to hunt here in WPa. He had the required red and orange on but the guy who shot him was more interested in making a kill on a running deer that he did not notice the other guy standing between him and the deer.
Probably the most fun I had hunting was for groundhogs. Many summer evenings spent laying on the ground a couple hundred yards or so away from a ground hog hole, gun on a rest waiting, waiting , waiting, for the target to emerge from his hole. Then "POP" off went gun and usually the ground hog was gone too. Had 5 different farms that allowed my friends and I to hunt on a regular basis.
Did do a lot of trap shooting from the mid 70's to the early 80's. Used to shoot about 3-4 times a week from April through November. Had a couple buddies who would travel to the various shooting clubs in our area to shoot.
Have fun in the woods but by all means be very careful.

I have always enjoyed shooting. Mostly rifles and pistols, but some trap too. I used to use it as my stress reliever. I can't afford the ammo any more though. I finally took hunter safety course last year, and did go deer hunting, but didn't see anything. Nice excuse to get outside though. I have a gun safe full of assorted guns, mostly the shotguns and a couple .22s I inherited from my Dad, but I also bought a 9mm Hi-Point Carbine, a Beretta U22 Neos, and an AK-47. Of the pile of shotguns I have, the only one I actually use still is a Remington 870 express. I don't know why I am so attached to that one with all of the beauties my Dad left me, but I am just comfortable with it. I used to get out a couple times a week with the rifles and pistol, but it has been a while. They have each seen a lot of rounds. I had pre-ordered a Taurus 24-7 when they first came out, but I never got my call back. I ended up spending the money on a TV.

I knew I like you..... there is nothing better then the 870 wingmaster,,the express is close enough lol. I have a 1969 model Wingmaster that was my first shotgun. My dad bought it used from a friend that was killed in a car wreck several years ago. So a lotta memories on that one. Fuzzy

When I lived in AZ I hunted rattlesnake - it was a great way to spend the day in the desert, and you had a fairly good chance of coming across some, too...LOL. What I liked about it was learning the habits of the different species, where and when to find them, and setting goals to find specific ones. I've caught Western Diamondback, Mohave, Black-Tailed, Tiger, and Speckled rattlesnakes. I've also come across many of the Sonoran Gopher Snakes and California King Snakes. Haha, one time I actually came across a Gila Monster! That was cool.
I've always had an interest in guns, and the outdoors, however I've never had much extra $$ to spend on guns, ammo, ranges.... Just recently I've gotten back into shooting, going with my Uncle to the range he's a member of. I've got my BIL's Colt 1911 (long story), a Japanese rifle the my Grandfather brought back from WWII (takes 6.5 Jap) and is a blast to shoot, a .22 Remington that was my dad's. I've gotten to shoot my dad's Remington 700, and he said I can have it if I want. He also has a German Drilling that his Uncle brought back from WWII - it has a twin double barrel that my cousin has.
I've never been "real" hunting, though, LOL. I'd love to go some time, but don't really know where, etc. I need to take the PA hunter's safety course, and I'm looking into joining the local Izaak Walton League - which I'm hoping will be an avenue for me to learn more about hunting, etc.... Plus, they have a trout farm and are big into fishing in the area - I think it'd be good for the kids, too....

Deer is my main thing. I missed one hunting season (last year) in the past 10 years or so. Wife had a hysterectomy right after the season started and I never did get out there at all.
Our deer started on the 17th and I plan on going tomorrow. I spent last week setting up the stand and checking things out. I'm hunting fields this year for the first time, instead of planted pines, so we'll have to see how everything works out.
Oh yeah, I'm a 45-70 type of guy. Never had a deer move after being hit with one of them, unlike some of the "cool" small-super velocity calibers that get all the hunting press...

I use to spend a lot of time with a 444 Marlin deer hunting. For open felds it sucked as it was not a distance weapon, like the 45-70. I prefer the bigger boomer rounds myself. Although as a much younger man I use to shoot a lighter round (22-250) from a Miodel 700 my Uncle gave me. Got a lot of deer over open fields with that weapon. Just had to be a bit more aware of shot placement though, Now I use the good ole SE of the shooting world, the 30-06 ,mostly.' Fuzzy

yep, those large calibers don't work well over fields, but I'm at the point in my hunting career where the thrill has left me and I can pass up shots much easier than I did before. I normally get one doe for meat and then look for the trophy.
I went this morning actually- right after I posted the first time- and chose the Marlin 30-30 (my favorite caliber of all time) but didn't see anything and then decided to walk and look for signs.

Very similar ballistics and a lot more knock down. Fuzzy
