Is it really going to be as hard as it looks to get one? I purchase my first 1912 cased gem on the cheap and traded for a Jr. Now I see that I'll have to get in line if I want a per 1912. Fair assumption? Are they rare in the wild.
Kind regards,
Gerard

Eh they are not really that rare. They are going for higher prices these days but I see them around fairly often. The hunt is often part of the fun. Good luck on your quest, and remember it is just a flesh wound. Fuzzy

I've got the LC listed in the buy/sell section, not sure if that's the kind you're looking for or not.

It is hard right now to find one for what I am willing to spend on a razor since I consider myself a shaver and a cheap ass collector!
But they can be found....sometimes people will be away from ebay when one goes up and you can get it at a decent price.

Recently picked up a 1912 and waiting for the razor and Pella blades to arrive. Wanting to step away from straights for a while, just a change of pace. Being a head shaver DE's just don't work out as well, constant clogging and rinsing. I don't see that happening with an SE. Kind regards,

Fellow head shaver as well. I've used the GEM's a couple times but it just takes way too long. Same with injectors and DE's.The GEM's do "drain" pretty well through two holes under the blade. I'm perfectly happy using the Personna Magnum M5 multiblade monstrosity, or the Trac II every morning on the noggin

Fuzzy Before you ban me may I please try to explain. I see headshaving as a chore, similar to brushing my teeth, or ironing a shirt. The M5 is dirt cheap, $5.88 for 4 cartridges at WM and is the cheapest, most efficient tool available to perform a task that I find no real pleasure in doing, just in the results. I'm finished explaining myself. Ban me if you must.

( In my defense it was my Grand Fathers heh) Is it that much harder to shave ya head? I suspect that I will have to start that here before too long myself. GRRRRRRR . But it will have to be with a SE probably. Can not bring myself to buy that other stuff. Fuzzy

My procedure is to lather the dome, one pass against the grain, rinse with cold water then feel around for missed spots to touch up. I can get this done with the M5 or Trac II in 10 minutes or less total time. With anything else it's lather, a pass wtg, relather, atg, feel for missed areas to touchup. That takes me 20-30 minutes. Some guys are really good with the DE's,SE's and straights and get it done really quick, I just knock it out and move on to my morning coffee and paper before work.

AHHH morning coffee.... having my afternoon coffee now. (Community dark roast.,.}I get into the ritual of the shave a lot. so would probably enjoy the extra time on the shave. But I am going to hold off on that as long as I can. Too many knots on the ole noggen. Fuzzy

I used to drink dark roast coffee but Alton Brown was explaining that the longer coffee is roasted the lower the caffeine content is, so I switched to the light roasts.Usually Maxwell House master or breakfast blend, which I brew very strong.

Fair assumption? Are they rare in the wild. Kind regards, Gerard I'm a little confused . . . You are asking about a "lather catcher" and yet you mention you "traded for a Jr." One of the most common "lather catchers" that I'm aware of is the 1900/1901 patent Gem Jr. Bar Razor. I suspect that when you mention your "Jr." perhaps you are talking about a 1912 patent Gem Jr. and yet you seem to be differentiating a "1912" from a "Jr.". What am I missing here? No matter what comes of my confusion here, the Gem Jr. Bar Razor is, in my opinion, the best safety razor ever designed. Since I started using one, I get the best and most comfortable shaves I've ever had. That is after 55 or so years of wet shaving and trying many different DE's, SE's, injectors and cartridge razors. Regards, Tom

Hey Trooper,
No to worry about being banned cause you use a cartridge for the head shave. As a former head shaver myself I can empathize with you.
I have a rather large hole in my haircut and at one point I decided to shave my head. It lasted for about 6 years. Somewhat of a chore to do every day so I got to the point of doing it only about 3 times a week (gray hair made it easier to look better only doing it that much).
At first I used the Fusion but then when I went to DE/SE shaving I began using those razors. To say that it could get messy is an understatement. I found that I would cut myself even when I was careful with the DE/SE razors. Nothing really bad but I often did not notice it until I was out and about and someone commented on the blood clot on my head.
So last June I took the plunge and let my hair grow back. I still need to shave the rather large hole in the middle of my haircut but that is easy with whatever razor I am using that day as a simple touch up pass on my head.
I say if you get the best and easiest results with the modern razor go for it. Whose to argue with a Hoosier"Super"Trooper.
