Had a day off work today. What does a bloke do? Mow the lawn, clean up around the house, catch up on my tax return? No,he decides to get out the Norton and go to town on a Star wedge blade. 100 passes on both sides of the stone to be precise. ;D The blade has taken an edge that I didn't think possible. Followed up with 60 laps on the Dovo strop and I think it might just be shave ready. I will be letting you know how it goes in one of my 1886 Kampfe's. Can't wait.

Well...... ? I would love to hear how you honed it. Did you tape the spine edge, or use a holder, or place it flat on the hone, or........ does the Norton hone dry, with water, or.... hone edge going first or..... hmm, the dirty details!! Oh, and I have way too many days like that too! Darn taxes never seem to make it over a serious, and likely necessary, overhaul of some component of the 'collection'! .

I used the stropping handle, therefor no need to tape the spine. The stone is used wet and I did 100 passes on the coarse side and another hundred on the fine side using very light pressure.I might even attempt to make a stropping handle for my Roll's and Darwin blades now.

The rolls blades have big enough spines that you could probably just use your fingers and lay it on the hone. If you do make/find something capable of holding a Rolls or Darwin blade please let us know. By course and fine side I am assuming your are using the 4/8k Norton?

I am not always the sharpest blade in the case, so bear with me on this: You had the blade in the strop handle when you honed. You contacted the the blade holder on the hone as well as the blade edge? So held it against the stone that way and honed? Did this create marks on the stropping handle where it contacted the hone for all those strokes?

I am using a regulation 4k 8k hone. You have to take your time with the whole process. :)The last thing I want to do is damage "My Precious"handle. I think my method of honing is similar to the way things were done back in the day,it's just that I finish off on a regulation strop. Again, very slowly.

Slow and easy is usually the best way to do things anyway. Too many people seem to forget that these days though.. just an observation. Fuzzy

I keep meaning to get my Wilkinson 7 day wedge blades shave ready. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I guess I need to start by getting a hone. Is a Norton 4/8k hone what you guys would recommend?

Is a Norton 4/8k hone what you guys would recommend? My dear Kevin, what hones are needed depends on the condition of the blade. As long as there are no nicks in the blades and they are not dull as dirt a 4/8k Norton combo will do nicely. Shaving off an 8k can be rough to some people though so you might get a higher finisher stone like a coticule or you can use .5 cromium oxide pastes. This gives a smotther feel to a blade for some. Regards, Whoosh

Thanks my friend...I just got off the phone with SRD and they hone wedge blades for the same price as a straight hone. I think I am going go that route since I have never honed anything before. Will just get one done and see what I think before getting the rest done.
Anyone know how many shaves one can expect from a wedge blade that has been honed? I have a VAS strop so I will be able to strop between shaves.

Will just get one done and see what I think before getting the rest done. Well that is good to know. I may just have to have one of my Rolls blades done that way just to see how sharp it can actually get. It takes forever to get a dull Rolls blade shaveable - and even then I always wonder where the limit is where it won't get any sharper and I am just damaging it.

That's what I'm thinking too. That way I will know what a good shave ready wedge looks and feels like.

This is good news, and yes if you have never honed anything Kevin getting it done by a pro (if nothing else than a reference to how sharp it could/should be) is reccomended and alot cheaper Thanks for the info I might just have to send Lynn and Doc one of my wedges to see what they can do with it. Let us know when you get it back and how it shaves ;D
